Wine Cork Crafts – How To Make A Trivet

Wine corks are one of those materials that many of us have lying around. But sometimes it’s hard to come up with a good project. So today I wanted to share with you a wonderfully easy DIY that will use up all of those leftover corks and you’ll end up with something functional to use in the kitchen. Read on to find out how to make this simple wine cork trivet.
Here’s what you’ll need for this wine cork craft:
- 35 wine corks
- A sharp kitchen knife
- A cutting board
- E6000 Glue
- Aluminum Foil Tape
- Scissors
Step by step instructions to make the wine cork trivet:
Begin by cutting all of your corks in half. Rotate the cork as you cut… this will create a cleaner edge.
Begin gluing the corks together, making sure that all of the cut ends are on the top. Try to place the glue up toward the cut end of the cork so that it doesn’t ooze out all over the wine side of the corks (which is what you’ll see once it’s finished).
Place the wine sides of the cork on your work surface as you’re adjusting them so they will end up creating a relatively flat surface. Start with three corks in a triangle, then add one in the nook between two as shown above.
Continue outwardin this manner until you end up with a hexagon shape that’s about 8″ at its widest point. Some corks are slightly larger than others, so you’ll need to adjust as you go along. But once you add the aluminum strip around the outside, everything should stay together nicely. Allow the glue to dry for a couple of hours.
Next, cut a 3/4″ strip of aluminum foil tape. The length should be about 1.5 times the circumference of your trivet (I cut mine to 36″).
Flip the corks over so the cut sides are down. Peel some of the adhesive backing from the tape, and begin sticking it to acork. The bottom edge of the tape should be flush with the bottom edge of the corks.
After it is attached to one cork, use the edge of your closed scissors to tuck the tape into the nook between corks. Then attach it to the next cork, and continue this process all the way around. Overlap the ends just a bit, and then cut off the excess tape. And you’re finished!
Aren’t those colors just magnificent? Who knew there was so much variation? And so many different patterns in the cork!
Cork is a great material for any sort of hot pad because it absorbs heat, so it will be the perfect trivet to protect the surface of your table. Not to mention, it will surely be a conversation starter. Enjoy!
