How to make rope wrapped basked
Before we go any further, we want to make sure you have all your materials on hand. The last thing you want to do, just as you’re getting into a rhythm, is to go running around after some material or another.
Step 1: Add the rope
The first thing we need to do is to get the glue gunand thetin can and start adding some hot glue to the can, right by the lip. Then, pick up the thick rope and start applying it to the hot glue.
Make sure you go steadily around the tin can. You want the rope to go as straight as possible, so go inch by inch here, applying hot glue and then securing the rope as you go.
When the ropes meet, you want to add some hot glue right at the joining point. Since the thread will now go downwards towards another layer around the can, you want to cover this spot as best you can.
Continue adding hot glue beneath the first layer of rope and press the material into the glue.
Much like you’ve done until now, carefully lay in the rope.
You want to have about give layers of rope at the top before you stop.
Get the scissors and cut off the excess rope here.
Next, you’ll start adding rope to the bottom area of the tin can. Measure out the height of the five rows of rope and apply the same height to the lower area of the tin. Get the glue gun and apply some hot glue to the tin before adding in the rope.
Keep adding small bursts of hot glue to the tin can and following up with the rope. Be careful here as the rope will be harder to set down straight.
Wrap the rope around the can as you go, making sure the rope layers are close together.
Finish up applying the tope and cut any excess material with your scissors.
Step 2: Make some tassels
Next, you want to create some tassels for your cute rope wrapped basket. So, get the gold thread and cut a small length of it.
Get the dark yellow crewel thread and start wrapping it around two of your fingers. You can also use a piece of cardboard if you’d rather avoid wrapping the thread on your fingers.
After making enough passes, get thescissors and cut the thread.
Get the gold thread you cut earlier and pass it through the loop of crewel thread. Tie a double knot to secure the loop.
Then, you want to cut another length of gold thread and tie another knot, this time around the whole group of threads, slightly lower than the point where you tied the previous knot.
Wrap the gold thread around the spot a bunch of times to create a beautiful tassel.
Once you’re done with the thread, cut off any excess and make sure it’s all perfectly secure.
Get thescissorsand cut through the material from one end to the other. Then, you want to trim the tassel a bit to make sure the threads are all equal.
Repeat the process until you have several tassels. We’ve made four of them. As you can see, all of them have a long thread at the top, as this is what you’ll use to secure it in their permanent position. Also, we made two of them in light yellow and two in dark yellow crewel for some diversity.
Step 3: Prepare the hemp twine
Next, you need to get the hemp twine and measure it out around the tin can. The thread will go over the rope you glued down earlier, so make sure you place it accordingly.
Once you’ve reached around the tin can once, you need to get thescissorsand cut off the excess.
Once you have the exact length of twine you need, it’s time you start adding decor pieces.
Push a yellow wood bead on the twine, making sure to give it some space.
Then, get a tassel and tie it to the twine with a double knot. Then, cut the excess thread with your scissors.
Keep going, adding wood beads and the tassels, alternating the decorations.
Step 4: Glue the decorated hemp twine
Now that the decorations are in place, you can glue the hemp twine to the tin can. Add some hot glue to the rope, somewhere in between the first and second layers is perfect.
Press the twine into the glue and hold it there for a few seconds to the material sets well.
Add glue every now and then and continue pressing the hemp twine into it so the glue sets.
Complete the circle and add more hot glue to the end, making sure the twine overlaps perfectly.
Step 5: Make a bow
Our rope wrapped basket needs more decorations. So, let’s make a bow out of rope. Cut off a piece of rope and get your glue gun. Place some hot glue to one of the sides of the rope and make a loop, pressing the middle of the rope into the glue.
Then, add more hot glue to the joining spot and bring the other piece of rope into a loop, pressing it into the glue.
Make sure you hold this bow pressed neatly to create a beautiful bow.
Step 6: Place the bow
Now that the bow is done, it’s time we place it on the tin can. Add some hot glue right above the line of rope on the bottom of the tin. Press the rope bow into the glue and secure it there.
Once the bow is in place, add more hot glue to the middle of it and bring in the wood flower decor. Press the decor piece into the glue and make sure it stays there.
There we go! It’s a fairly easy craft and it will make your desk look that much nicer as you get to tindy it up a bit and have a sunny decorative piece too!
This is a project that you can customize however you see fit, changing the decorations we used, adding more or less rope than we did, going for different colors, and so on. We would love to hear your thoughts on the project and tell us how you like it. Also, you can send us your pictures over social media so you can brag with your creations.
