How to Make a Roped Cup Cozy
There’s nothing better when you wake up on a cold morning than to have a warm beverage by your side. To give your mug of coffee cup some flair, try creating this simple, cup cozy made from just a few craft supplies. It will not only protect your hands from the heat, it’s also a craft that you can take with you on the go. It makes a great statement and is also a great gift idea!
For this DIY, you’ll need:
- Cardstock paper
- Thick craft twine
- E-6000 glue or hot glue (for cold beverages)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Tape
Start by cutting the base or backing of the cozy using cardstock. Choose any color cardstock you prefer- I think the brighter the cardstock, the more fun it looks. I wanted this cup cozy to be about three inches high, so I cut a strip of cardstock three inches down and the standard eleven inches wide.
Next, wrap the strip of cardstock around your travel cup or mug and secure it in place with a piece of tape. This is the base of the cup cozy that the rope will adhere to.
For this craft, I prefer to use a heavy duty glue such as E-6000. The only draw back to that is that it sometimes gives off somewhat of a strong odor. I’ve also tried this craft with hot glue, which did work well. Just keep in mind that if you beverage is extremely hot, there’s a chance that the glue may soften a bit. But I’ve tried this with both glues, and they seem to hold up well.
Starting at the top of the cardstock, while it is wrapped around your cup, add a dab of glue. Begin to wrap the craft rope around the cup, staying on the cardstock, so the glue doesn’t get on the cup itself. Align the rope with the top of the cup as your wrap around to keep it straight. At the end of the craft you will cut off the excess paper.
When you get to the bottom, cut off the excess rope and add just a little bit more glue. Secure it carefully and tight to the rest of the rope, making sure the end isn’t frayed and sticking out.
If you used E-6000 glue, you’ll need to let it cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, which is a few hours. Hot glue should be ready to go as soon as it dries in a few minutes. Once it is completely dry and secure, remove the cozy from the cup and cut off the excess paper from the top and bottom.
The great thing about using the craft rope is that you can tack on small paper messages or greetings which would be perfect for a DIY gift. The tack won’t go all the way through, but if you use a thumbtack with the flat top, it will sit better than a traditional one.
Use this cup cozy on the go or gift it to a friend! It’s a perfect and easy DIY for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday!
