How to Make Bird Garden Decor
Before we get started, we want to make sure you have all the materials ready to go. The last thing you want to do is to go searching for one thing or another as you’re concentrated on creating your piece.
Step 1: Draw your bird
The first thing we’re going to do is to draw our bird. Your rock must be clean, so make sure to scrub it a bit and then pick up your penciland draw a bird on the rock.
It really doesn’t have to be anything too complicated – just an outline of a creature that looks like a bird somewhat. We’re not going for any drawing prizes here.
You can even mark out the spot where the wing is gonna go, as you’ll be using a different material in that area.
Step 2: Hammer down on the tiles
Next, we’re going to pick up the small mosaic tile pieces and a hammer. Place the pieces over a round corkboard and start breaking down the pieces.
You want to use the pick end of the hammer as you want to break off the tiles into smaller pieces, not smash them down to dust.
Pick up the darker shade mosaic tiles and break them off too. We used two different shades, but you can go for whatever combination you want.
Pick up the white tiles and break those off too in the same manner. Keep in mind that your drawing isn’t too big, so you need pieces of appropriate size.
Step 3: Glue down the mosaic
Next, you want to get the mosaic glue and start applying it to the pieces. We’re starting off with one of thedecor beads, which we’ll use to mark the eye of the bird.
Then, we picked up a dark piece of the tile that has a triangular shape and placed it over the area where the beak of the bird is.
We also used the diamond-shaped decor beads and placed them over the area where the wing of the bird would be, placing five of them to fill in the space.
Then, we used the lighter shade of tiles to mark the area of the head of the bird and the white pieces to mark the front of the bird. We also applied darker shade tiles over the back of the bird.
Step 4: Fill in with fugue
Next, we’re using some tile fugue. We chose a lighter shade here to help better highlight the tiles we used. Mix a bit of the fugue with water, according to the instructions on the package, and mix it all together.
Once the mixture is ready, start piling it over the mosaic. Make sure it fills in all the gaps between the tiles. Even if it appears like you’ve covered some, it’s ok, as it will wipe off later on.
Use your sponge to give shape to the bird on your rock by wiping off some of the fugue that went beyond the tile design.
Get a piece of tissue and start cleaning the tiles forming the bird. You can also wipe them off later, again, but right now, you want to unearth them, so it’s easier in the long run.
There you go! Your bird garden decor piece is done. Just set it aside and allow the fugue to dry completely. You’ll find instructions on how long that’s going to take on the package.
If you loved making this decor piece, well, you can make more. Whether you’ll create birds or other shapes, that’s up to you, but you certainly have a lot of left-over tile pieces to work with. Share your pics with us over social media so we can admire them too!
